An Electron Microscopic Study on Alterations of Endoplasmic Reticulum in Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract
1
To evaluate alterations in endoplasmic reticulum(ER) and ribosomes in human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) with special reference to the relationship between the histological types and the degree of differentiation and the morphological and quantitative alterations in the component malignant cells, light and electron microscopic observations are carried out in 7 cases of human HCC. The specimens are obtained during lobectomy procedures for this purpose.
Morphological alterations of ER of the component cells of HCC include irregular hypertrophy characterized by marked dilatations of cisternae and papillary projections associated with depletion of ribosomes, which have been reported earlier by a number of investigators. These changes are not correlated with depletion of ribosomes, which have been reported earlier by a number of investigators. These changes are not correlated with the histological and the cytological patterms of HCC. To estimate quantitative alterations of ER, a scoring system designed for this study is applied and it is concluded that the reduction of ER is correlated with the degree of dedifferentiation of neoplastic liver cells, but not related to the histological and the cytological types of human HCC.
